Group Therapy + Needlepointing
A therapy and needlepointing group at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.
In the spring of 2010, Dr. Ellen Medway, a West Los Angeles based psycho-analyst and needlepointing enthusiast, led a weekly therapy group at the Hammer Museum. Behind closed doors participants met for eight 90-minute sessions of therapy. While the group pursued self-exploration, discovery and psychological enrichment, they also engaged with craft and art history as they needlepointed images based on art pieces from the Hammer Museum’s permanent collection. Dr. Medway chose a selection of works that she deemed conducive, relevant and pertinent to the therapeutic process. Images of these artworks were then made into needlepoint patterns.
Group Therapy + Needlepointing was created as part of Machine Project’s residency at the Hammer Museum.
